The firm represents a large number of local governments in Maine, including many cities and towns, school districts, sewer districts, and several counties (including the largest county in the state). The firm also represents many quasi-municipal corporations, such as the two publicly-owned waste-to-energy facilities in Maine and several special purpose districts. We advise our various local government client contacts (such as municipal councils and managers; school boards and superintendents; county commissioners and administrators; planning boards, and planning directors, boards of appeal and code enforcement officers) on a wide variety of pending and potential legal issues ranging from large property tax assessment challenges to tax-sharing with large scale wind farms. In addition, we negotiate and draw contracts, handle labor negotiations and prosecute or defend litigation in federal and state courts and before various state and local administrative boards. Our municipal law experience is also of great assistance to our private clients who have dealings, often real estate related, with local governmental entities we do not represent. Lawyers in our firm have extensive experience dealing with state agencies (such as Maine D.E.P.) and federal agencies (such as the United States E.P.A. and the Army Corps of Engineers) in securing regulatory approvals for a variety of large and small-scale development projects.
