Michael A. Nelson

Michael Nelson has been a commercial litigator and trial lawyer with Jensen Baird Gardner & Henry for more than thirty years. He also chairs the Firm’s litigation department and serves as its ethics counsel. He previously chaired the Maine Supreme Judicial Court’s Advisory Committee on the Rules of Professional Responsibility, and currently is Adjunct Professor of Professional Responsibility and Legal Ethics at the University of Maine School of Law. He frequently lectures on issues of professional responsibility and legal ethics.

Before joining Jensen Baird, Mike clerked for the Honorable John H. Pratt, United States District Court Judge for the District of Columbia. He subsequently was a prosecutor with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C., until he came to Maine and joined Jensen Baird in 1980. Since that time, he has litigated and tried a wide range of commercial and business cases including those involving issues of antitrust, business torts, breach of contract, corporate disputes, defamation, employment discrimination, environmental issues, banking and lender liability issues, professional malpractice, and securities. Mike regularly acts as local counsel in federal court, assisting major out of state firms including Davis Polk & Wardwell, Morrison Foerster and DLA Piper.

Mike and his wife, Lucretia, live in a solar home in the Capisic area of Portland.
